Cognition + Thinking Skills
What is cognition?
Cognition refers to thinking abilities like memory, attention, and executive-function skills. We like to refer to executive-function skills as our "adulting" skills. Executive-function skills are higher-level cognitive skills like:

Working-memory
-
Task initiation and completion
-
Time management
-
Organization
What is cognitive therapy?
Cognitive treatment aims to improve thinking and communication skills. This therapy also includes management of the physical and emotional symptoms that often occur with cognitive difficulty.

We often provide cognitive therapy to the following populations:
-
Mild cognitive impairment
-
Brain injury
-
Concussion/post-concussion syndrome
-
Stroke
-
ADHD/ADD
-
Alzheimer disease
-
Dementia
-
Parkinson’s
-
MS
-
Long-COVID
-
Huntington’s

What does cognitive therapy look like at Sagebrush?
Step 1: Complete an evaluation.

You will meet with your speech therapist to review your medical history, report cognitive difficulties, complete assessments and questionnaires, and collaboratively create a plan with your speech therapist to improve your cognitive difficulties.

Step 2: Complete therapy.
Cognitive therapy often includes all or most of the following:

1. Improvement of brain health.

2. Management of emotional impact of cognitive difficulties through counseling, education, and exploration of additional resources.

3. Management of physical impact of cognitive difficulties such as fatigue and brain fog through strategies like energy conservation.

4. Application of preferred strategies to reduce memory mistakes (e.g., losing items, forgetting why you walked in a room, etc.) and improve memory abilities.

5. Application of research based therapy approaches to improve your memory. For example, you may use a researched therapy approach to improve your ability to recall your medical team members names.
